“Archaeology” Magazine about the Discoveries in Karanovo
The latest issue of the American magazine “Archaeology” published an article and a leading photograph upon page 3 about the finds made by the team of the Bulgarian archaeologist Vesselin Ignatov in 2009 and the restoration work done by Sylvia Borissova. Under the title “Royal Thracian Tomb” it gives an account of the tomb discovered last year in Karanovo. The author supposes that it belonged to a member of the family of the last Thracian king Remetalcus III, because of the splendid funerary gifts, found within.
The oldest funeral with a chariot in Bulgaria was found out in Karanovo
Following the discovery of the silver gilt cups by the archeologists of Vesselin Ignatov’s team, an unique glass rhyton with an unknown animal, a golden ring with a precious stone and coins which refer the possible date of the tomb to the first century AD, were brought to light.
Professor Valeria Foll: "A Message and a Gift of the Forefathers”
I am impressed by the full accoutrements, the bronze vessels, the silver vessels with the plastic ornaments and gilt, the glass rhyton, and other items discovered in the lavish funeral with a chariot outside the village of Karanovo. The tomb is literally full of artifacts and the colleagues have hardly cleaned out a place for two people to work there. With this discovery V. Ignatov moves the emergence of chariots in funerals of Thracian aristocrats of the Roman epoch with half a century earlier.
Unknown Thracian Tomb Discovered near Karanovo
A build vaulted tomb of 3 by 4 meters’ size of a Thracian aristocrat from the last decades of the 1st Century and the first ones of the 2nd Century AD were discovered by the team of archeologist Vesselin Ignatov on the land of the village of Karanovo, Municipality of Nova Zagora. The funeral was extremely rich if one can judge by the farewell presents found out when excavation activities started. Two silver cups with images of the god of love, Eros, and unique glass vessels are among the most valuable objects discovered so far. The funeral inventory discovered so far comprises of a bronze jug, a bowl with a handle, patera with a handle resembling a ram’s head, a chandelier (a big bronze candlestick), oynohoe (a bronze jug), clay balsams, a set of 5 strigils with a strigils-holder (a set of crescent-shaped bronze sharp blades for personal hygiene of athletes and warriors), etc.
